Factory BMW timing chains can hold up to just about anything and
often last the entire life of a standard vehicle without needing
replacement.
When rebuilding the engine, especially for performance use, a
fresh timing chain is normally a good idea as the new items have
tighter tolerances, and the timing chain will be worn or
'loose'.
