Is your E30 M3 stumbling when you first give it gas? A little hard
to start? Maybe its idling funny, or not at all... or it smoothes
out quickly as it warms up?
These are all symptoms that could be caused by a cracked or leaky
intake manifold elbow. A leak after the AFM can be
fatal to
your S14, causing it to run lean and experience destructive
detonation (sometimes too quiet and slow to hear by ear).
If you suspect your intake elbow may be original, it may be best to
replace it before it cracks at the worst time. It is close to
impossible to see a legitimately leaky elbow with the naked eye. At
this price, we recommend you have an extra spare, especially if you
track your car.
VAC Tech tips:
-We recomend replacing this intake hose with OEM Vs. an aftermarket
piece: the OEM is designed to flex and twist the correct amount.
Aftermarket hoses like the popular Samco (that we like a lot for
other applications) will not flex properly on the E30 M3 intake box
and can cause the weak welds to snap or crack where the airbox is
mounted to the chassis.
-A 'Smoke Test' is the reliable way to check for leaks of this
elbow. Many times a small leak is impossible to detect with the eye
and can cause intermittent problems. Most professional auto repair
locations have a Smoke Test Machine.
