We like these units a lot for the vintage enthusiast. We have found
these works great on the M10 powered 2002/1600 and 320i cars, as
well as M20 & M30 engines that are high compression or
turbocharged.
MSD's 6AL shares the same proven circuitry of the 6A with the very
handy addition of a built-in adjustable rev limiter; we think this
feature is crucial.
Popular with the import, truck, and domestic enthusiasts, the
powerful multiple sparks of the MSD 6A/ 6AL also work perfectly on
our BMW's to help ensure complete combustion. This means more
power, easier starting, reduced plug fouling, and even increased
fuel economy.
Like all of the MSD 6 Series Ignitions, the 6AL will work with
virtually any vehicle as long as it has a 12-18 volt electrical
system and a distributor.
The 6AL models built-in rev limiter helps prevent engine failures
from over-revs and damage to your motor in the event of a missed
shift or driveline failure.
The RPM limit is adjustable in 100 rpm increments with MSDs plug-in
modules. When the engine reaches your selected limit, the 'Soft
Touch' circuitry begins dropping the spark to various cylinders. On
the next cycle, these plugs are fired again to prevent fuel from
loading up in the cylinder. The result: smooth and accurate
limiting action without backfires or roughness; great!
This Soft Touch Rev Control also opens the door for you to add RPM
based accessories such as a Two-Step Rev Control. Perfect for
racing BMWs, a Two Step allows you to set two rpm limits; one for a
holeshot RPM and another for redline/overrev protection.
- The 6AL is supplied with rubber shock
mounts for installation and modules for 3,000, 6,000, 7,000 and
8,000 rpm points.
It can be triggered using breaker points, a magnetic pickup or the
output of an electronic amplifier. This is a great match for
Pertronix or our awesome custom VAC M10 distributor!
All necessary parts and wiring instructions are included for a
simple and effective install. No vintage BMW should be without
it.
