What Is Walnut Shell Blasting?

Also known as Walnut Shell Cleaning, Walnut Shell Blasting is a service where fine particles of milled and processed walnut shells (the same kind of Walnut that you eat) are fired at high pressures into the intake port of the engine cylinder head, and recovered simultaneously under vacuum.

Why is it needed? What do you do?

With the advent of direct fuel injection, fuel (that also contains some detergents) is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber. This is highly efficient for the engines power and fuel economy, however cleaning of the intake valves and ports is no longer talking place.

With conventional fuel injection, fuel is sprayed into the intake track, and some fuel works with its detergent properties onto the valve and intake track.

Buildup begins when the combustion byproducts of burnt fuel travel backwards into the intake track, and the carbon byproducts of the burnt fuel collect and form "carbon deposits."

In Direct Injection engines, carbon is no longer naturally dissolved from valves and ports in the normal running process, and manual cleaning becomes a requirement.

Walnut Shell Blasting is a safe way to clean the valves and ports. Blasted at high speeds the Walnut media effectively removes carbon deposits and is a quick and easy way to restore performance and economy to your BMW direct injected engine.

Unlike sand and other abrasive media, walnut shell granules don't wear metal - they only remove deposits that aren't part of the intakes original design. In essence, walnut shell blasting only removes what is necessary, quickly and safely- which is why it has become the most viable solution for cleaning intakes and the method that BMW uses.

Symptoms Your Engine is in Need of a Walnut Shell Cleaning:

Rough idle, delayed throttle response and increased oil consumption. The consensus of many BMW experts is that the valves of these engines should be cleaned using Walnut Shell Blasting every 40,000 to 50,000 miles before these symptoms become a problem for the driver or negatively affect the running of the engine.

Your throttle response will improve and your idle will become smoother. Engine power output and efficiency will also benefit from the cleaning.

Many of us change oil, check brakes, and have the "common" services performed on our vehicles, however...
Your transmission, a costly and important part of your vehicle could be neglected.

To last as you would expect (and this could be up to 300k miles!) your transmission will need servicing from time to time as well; especially in high performance automobiles like your BMW.

If you have been following BMWs dealer guidelines for transmission servicing, which many do; there are facts you should know if you wish to have the highest reliability and life possible from your transmission:
Most modern BMWs come from the factory with something called "lifetime fill" fluid in the transmission.
This includes both automatics and manuals... What BMW isn't so quick to tell you is that they state 80,000 miles IS that lifetime. This is silly!
We strongly recommend replacing the fluid no later than 100,000 miles or you may be in for an unwelcome surprise; early transmission problems or total failure. What regular flushing of the transmission will offer is a long life of smooth shifting and excellent performance.

This can be likened to eating a healthy diet thats low in cholesterol. If transmission fluid is like the blood of the transmission, we want it to flow freely without any obstructions or clogs, and also we want it to be clean so it can do its multitude of jobs including cooling and cleaning the gears and valves.

We offer complete transmission flush services for both Autos and manuals. This replaces all (Up to 16 quarts in the Auto and 2-4 in a manual) with fresh, correctly specified fluid.
We only use the OEM or better, and completely flush the system with an automated machine. This is much better than the conventional way of drain and fill, where only 5-6 quarts gets replaced, all (16!) quarts are flushed.
