The Cat Cams range for the F4R engine are machined from hollow billet steel blanks to ensure strength and durability. The cams available range from mild cams for fast road use up to full race spec extreme cams for high powered race engines. The cams are also available with or without the VVT function as found on the standard cams, this is a recommended feature to keep on road spec cams as it improves response and driveability. Deleting the VVT is usually done on a race engine and in order to do this you will also need to fit the Cat Cams vernier pulleys we also have available on our website.
Out of the full range of cams available there are a few points to take into account when choosing the correct cams for your engine:
5502428: These are a very good fast road cam which will work with the standard ecu. We would recommend the ecu is mapped once the cams are fitted and gains of 10-12bhp can usually be seen once the ecu is mapped. The idle speed is also very smooth with these cams. Will work with the standard hydraulic followers and valve springs.
5502421: These are the next step up from the 428 cams but are best suited to cars fitted with a non standard ecu and will require specialist mapping. Power gains are slightly higher at 12-15bhp and the idle speed will not be quite as smooth as that on the standard or 428 cams. Will work with the standard hydraulic followers and valve springs.
5502420: This is the Renault Sport Group N profile and they are machined to the maximum limits allowed. Will work with the standard hydraulic followers and valve springs.
5502422: These cams will require an aftermarket ecu solution as the standard ecu will not be able to run them. Will work with standard hydraulic followers but uprated valve springs required. Best suited to ITB'ed high compression engine builds.
5502423: These are the cams we have used to great effect in the race engine we have built for a customer's rally car, they will work with the standard hydraulic followers but will require uprated valve springs and valve pockets relieved.
Tech Notes:
- If you plan on tracking your car, VAC recommends High Performance Valve Springs. This ensures our customers always get the best reliability from their engine by helping prevent pistons-to-valve contact in the event of an over-rev or mis-shift.
- All camshafts must be installed by a professional, who can check piston to valve, and valve seal clearances.
