The M10 / M30 Cylinder head design has very short valve guides and a heavy valve train.
This causes the guides to wear faster than in most other engines. This is most commonly seen on tired M10 engines in 2002s that seem to be smoking out of their tail pipe, regardless of whether the seals were recently replaced.

VAC Tech Tip:
Make sure you replace guides on all M10 or M30 cylinder heads when refreshing the head. Many times we have seen “rebuilt” heads from shops that did not have guides replaced, this is shortchanging the customer.
