If you are breaking crankshafts and oil pumps, the cause may be a mystery to you as it has been to many of our customers. We know that controlling the harmonic resonance of the BMW 6 is highly important as RPMs rise, but the ideal configuration of the inline-6 motor makes even experienced engine builders overlook some fundamental principals of engine harmonics that can be destructive.
FACT: harmonics CAN destroy these motors despite their ideal 'inline six' balance. Popular word says the OEM units do not fail, an in many cases failures are in fact uncommon... However we have dozens of clients who have managed to prove otherwise as engines are modified further-away from standard configurations.
Fitting their engine with an ATI damper solved their issues and restored confidence in the powertrain.
Why do some racers have issues while others don't? Lightweight components such as performance flywheels, or knife-edged cranks alter the resonant (natural) frequency(s) of the rotating assembly and can therefore cause failures during high RPM use. Since nearly no two modified engines are exactly alike, this can strike different customers at different times.

Available in overdrive, underdrive (for use with standard size pulleys) or standard diameter (for use with underdriven accessories, or supercharged cars). Non-Trigger Ring Harmonic Dampers read crank shaft signals off of the back of the engine. E46 M52tu and M54 engines use the Non-Trigger Ring Kit (OBD2) which includes:
- Damper
- Pulley, standard
- Mounting and installation hardware
Trigger Ring option for OBD1 systems, adds a trigger wheel to the Non-Trigger kit listed above. Trigger Ring Harmonic Dampers reads crank shaft signals off of the front of the engine.
VAC Tech Notes:
- For Street/Track cars with Air Conditioning, the Additional A/C Pulley Option is REQUIRED as the OE A/C pulley is not compatible. The additional mounting and installation hardware is also included.
