Water/Methanol systems have been used since WWII to increase power on booted engines, and with today’s electronic controllers it has become safe and easy to use. Water acts as an "intercooler" to reduce the temperature of the incoming air, and the methanol acts to increase the octane rating, or to increase the knock threshold of your fuel (reducing the threat of detonation).
When combined the results are impressive – gains of 10-15% more horsepower and 15-25% more torque are common when adding water/methanol and increasing nothing other than boost. This system is a great way to make more power or give yourself a generous safety margin when increasing boost.
